HOW MUCH DO DJs COST FOR A PARTY?

Planning for a party whether it’s a birthday party, anniversary party, sweet 16, communion, block party, graduation party, or just a backyard party cost can be expensive.  The price that DJs charge varies and depending on the type of event, DJs do charge accordingly.  For example, for a Wedding, Bar Mitzvah, or Sweet 16, and depending on the services you want and the experience of the DJ, the cost for these events on Long Island can range from $800 to $2,400 for a 4 hour party.  My dad always said “If you buy cheap, you get cheap!”  To a certain extent, this is true.  Many of my satisfied customers told me horror stories of how they booked a “cheap” DJ for their prior party only to find that the DJ cancelled at the last minute, or the DJ didn’t know what they were doing, etc.  At LIDJMUSIC, we pride ourselves as Long Island’s affordable DJ.  We have served the Long Island community since1999.

DJ PRICES

Many customers don’t realize that when DJs price a job, they must factor in the additional time and labor of overhead tasks. For example, if a customer wants a three hour DJ party, the DJ has to pack all the equipment into their vehicle, drive to the customer’s event location, unpack the equipment from the vehicle, set-up the equipment for the party, run the event, then tear down and pack up the equipment after the event is over, bring all the equipment back to their vehicle, drive back to their base location, and unpack their vehicle.  So, a three hour DJ job typically takes the DJ about 6 hours of actual time.  Assuming you hired your DJ for your entire party; a good DJ will arrive well before your party guests arrive to set up the equipment for your party, and will then be the last one to leave after packing everything up. On Long Island, excluding high end formal affairs such as Weddings or Bar Mitzvahs, you can expect to pay approximately $75-$150 per hour just for DJ services. The cost for the travel, set-up, and pack-up of the equipment should be included in that price.  

WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR

If you price compare several DJs and you find one that’s really cheap, let the buyer beware.  That typically means the DJ will probably be very young, and have little experience.  Remember what my dad said! Some DJs may not post their prices on their website, and ask you to call them.  That’s another red flag!  DJs may employ this tactic to unfairly overcharge a customer who is having a party in an affluent area or to solicit a job from a customer who is willing to pay more for the same date and time and cancel on another customer that isn’t paying as much.  At LIDJMUSIC, we don’t play these games with our customers and we post all our prices on our website, LIDJMUSIC.COM.

Another red flag issue when hiring a DJ, is there are a lot of "DJ Service Companies" on Long Island that don't actually service you directly.  Many of these DJ services either subcontract to another DJ or hire young, inexperienced DJs (pay them low wages) so the DJ service can be price/cost competitive to other DJs.
